Review: Wish (2023)
Wish, the 100th film by the Walt Disney Company focuses on Asha, a bright girl who makes a wish on a star but is all of a sudden met with the star she wished on. Chaos ensues as she and her friends battle against Magnifico the King of Rosas, to bring the star back home.
My favourite character was Magnifico the King of Rosas because of the development of his character through the story. He was voiced perfectly by Chris Pine. He has magical powers and is in charge of looking after the wishes his people make. He can choose who gets their wish granted.
The background artwork was a beautiful mixture of watercolour and digital editing. It reminded me a lot of The Little Mermaid and Sleeping Beauty. I absolutely loved looking at all the details on each of the characters’ clothing, for example, Asha had small shapes reminiscent of Aztec symbols and patterns.
The predominance of the songs and raps sounded the same, apart from Magnifico’s. His songs were the most dynamic and really stood out to me. The others sounded bland and had no real emotion. They also had a heavy amount of autotune which made them unbearable to listen to.
Disney is well known for having likable main characters, however I was very surprised to find that Asha was so irritating and had no clear sense of what the outcome of the story was. She had no drive and no goals to particularly achieve. Apart from getting the star home without being caught by Magnifico.
Overall the film was enjoyable in the first part but lacked a lot in the second part. I would recommend this film to people who have a real interest in the art style of animation.
I would rate it a ⅗ stars.
